Erdoğan uses 'fake' license plate to avoid election ban, daily says

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan allegedly placed another car's license plate on his official car in order to be able to continue using his car during the presidential election campaign and avoid an election ban that prohibits public officials from making use of public resources during an election campaign, a Turkish daily claimed on Friday.
“Erdoğan placed another license plate on his official car ... to create the impression that he is not using public resources during the [presidential] election campaign,” the Sözcü daily said. “The license plate on the car Erdoğan used on Thursday turned out to belong to another car. An examination conducted through the e-state system revealed that the plate used to belong to a 2009-model gray Fiat,” the daily added.

The e-state system, which has been in use since the end of 2008, allows the transferal of public services offered in the physical environment to the electronic sphere so that these operations can be carried out online.

According to the report, which the daily based on a report published by the news portal Gazeteport on Thursday, Erdoğan used a car with a civilian plate while traveling to an airport because be was traveling after the start of the period during which use of public resources by those running for a public office is prohibited by regulations. “Erdoğan used a Mercedes with the plate number '06 BV 8534' when he left home for a [presidential] election rally in Van but did not use the ANA plane [to fly to Van],” the report said. ANA is one of the planes available for the use of the prime minister.
